The Nature of Forgiveness
The Conditional Nature of Forgiveness:
Mr 11:25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
Mr 11:26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses
This translation lends itself to the idea of a Cause and Effect principle. If I Forgive then I will be Forgiven… and transversely, If I don’t Forgive then I won’t be Forgiven. The issue with this understanding is that in order to Earn God’s Conditional Forgiveness we must offer Unconditional Forgiveness to Everyone else. Thus, it fails to be Quid Pro Quo or an equal exchange. It fails because with this understanding what we are giving is actually much more substantial or even difficult than what God is placing on the table.
In the Salvation Sermons that many of us are used to hearing there is a great demand placed upon the unrighteous sinner to “Repent” in order to receive their Forgiveness. Again, the act of Reconciliation is often left to be interpreted as being initiated by man through the revelation of their guilt and surrendering themselves to God. This is illustrated in much the same way as a convicted felon would surrender themselves to the authorities for incarceration. In this scenario God is responding to man’s efforts.
It implies that God's Forgiveness is based upon the broken condition of our voluntary surrender and through the pleading for Forgiveness, God responds by granting us that which we ask for. Nothing could be further from the TRUTH. It is God who has, out of His Amazing Grace, Forgiven us of His own Free Will and without any provocation or obligation to us at all.
1jo 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us.
Ro 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
The very Nature of God’s Love for us is so Great that even while we were in the act or condition of open rebellion He was still reaching out for us. God’s Love for us is what places the Demand upon Himself to release us from our Guilt. It is not our actions or even our response to His love that sets in motion His Grace towards us. It is simply His undeniable Love for us that causes Him to Forgive without any provocation or conditions on our part.
In Short, Salvation is neither Earned nor Maintain by our Actions. Salvation is simply the acceptance of the fact that God Himself has Forgiven man of any and all transgressions for no other reason but because he loves us. Furthermore, all Redemptive Work (see below) necessary to accomplish this task was undertaken and completed by Jesus on our behalf. In other words, that which man had broken Jesus paid the price to repair and restore completely. This is the Gospel… Pure, Unadulterated and Powerful!
Redemptive Work: That which was necessary to restore Man to God’s intended place of Security, Authority and Prosperity. The act of restoring the Righteousness of God onto the Nature of Man.
